“Siberian style” on the bank of Baikal lake
News, 10 July 2018
On 12 July 2018, the 18th International School on Elementary Particle Physics and Astrophysics will be launched in the settlement Bolshie Koty, on the bank of Baikal Lake. This year, the International School on AstroParticle Physics (ISAPP) joined to the traditional organizers of the School, namely the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research and the Irkutsk State University. Obviously, thanks to this, the School will achieve a new step of development. The Helmholtz Alliance for Astroparticle Physics (HAP) and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research financially supported the School.
During eight days, students and young scientists from Bolivia, China, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Russia, Ukraine, and the USA will be engaged in the unique programme “Siberian style”: lectures, work in groups for fulfilling practical tasks, informal discussions with leaders of the largest international experiments and scientific centres. It is immersion in the environment of the latest knowledge about the nature of the Universe, information from participants of famous research collaborations, it is an opportunity to get detailed explanations and answers to questions and to present their research. In combination with the pristine nature, the purest lake water, which, as we know, has become part of the scientific facility of the Baikal neutrino telescope, such a technique not only helps to assimilate and deepen knowledge, but also to analyze it philosophically with colleagues.
The School’s scientific programme of this year will be fully dedicated to issues at the boundaries if astrophysics and particle physics. Lectures on cosmic rays, gamma-astronomy, neutrino physics, gravitational waves, black holes physics and other branches of physics will be delivered by scientists participating and managing the largest neutrino experiment IceCube, the Pierre Auger Collaboration and LHAASO experiments on cosmic rays.
