Rio-Russia Seminar

A Rio–Russia seminar was held on 22-24 March 2014 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Fluminense Federal University (Univeridade Federal Fluminence) which is one of the largest universities of the state, numbering up to 45,000 students, was the organizer of the seminar. The seminar followed the visit of leaders of the Fluminense Federal University to Russia in autumn 2013 and was a logical continuation and further development of relations between universities and research centres of Brazil and Russia.

On the Brazilian side the seminar was attended by 10 universities and research centres of the state, as well as representatives of large research foundations CAPES and FAPERJ. The Russian side was represented by 11 universities (including MSU) and JINR. UFF Rector Roberto Salles and the RF Consul in Rio de Janeiro O.M. Sotnikov made reports at the seminar. JINR was represented by BLTP Leading Scientific Researcher Doctor of Physics and Mathematics V.O. Nesterenko, who previously worked at the Federal University of Santa Catarina and the University of Sao Paulo. He acquainted participants of the seminar with information about JINR, the JINR University Centre and the innovation zone in Dubna.

About 30 reference reports were presented at the seminar, numerous meetings and discussions were held, 9 bilateral agreements were signed. An excursion to UFF laboratories was held. The seminar focused on three main areas of cooperation: 1) exchange of students and postgraduates, 2) lectures by invited lecturers in universities of Rio de Janeiro, 3) joint scientific research. Organizers of the meeting suggested using significant financial capabilities of Brazilian scientific foundations for implementation of these programmes. It allows now planning significant academic exchange.

UFF Rector Professor Roberto Salles expressed his wish to sign a bilateral agreement with JINR. The Russian Consul also promised to render support to the Russian Embassy in development of scientific relations of JINR and Brazil.
