Meetings. OPERA and neutrino

News, 21 May 2014

A working meeting of the International OPERA Collaboration was held on 19-22 May 2014 in the International Conference Hall in Dubna. The OPERA experiment conducts search of rare events of neutrino oscillations – the appearance of tau-neutrinos from a beam of muon-neutrinos. Registration of tau-neutrino is a very complicated task, until now only 12 events have been registered. 4 of them were registered in the OPERA experiment, and they were oscillated neutrinos, i.e. those that are generated in a very rare process.

The idea of neutrino oscillations appeared in Dubna more than 50 years ago. It was Bruno Pontecorvo, whose 100th anniversary was celebrated last year, who made an assumption about the existence of such a phenomenon.
