Method of pulsed neutron injection and neutron trapping in neutron storage ring device developed at JINR

News, 08 April 2025

Employees of the Laboratory of Neutron Physics at JINR Yuri Nikitenko, Evgeny Kolupaev, and Valery Zhuravlev obtained a patent for a method of pulsed neutron injection and neutron trapping in a neutron storage ring.

The invention can be used to increase the density and residence time of neutrons in a confined volume. According to the method, while a pulsed source injects neutrons, a magnetic field is created at the injection area in the side wall of the storage unit using an electromagnet. During the neutron trapping in the storage device, the magnetic field is eliminated in the intervals between the pulses of the neutron source. The electromagnet is positioned in such a way that the injection area in the side wall of the storage is located between the electromagnet’s poles. This results in an increase in the neutron flow density.

Congratulations to Yuri Nikitenko, Evgeny Kolupaev, and Valery Zhuravlev on receiving the state registration!
