JINR to train students of Dubna University for CMS scientific collaboration

News, 31 May 2021

Within the framework of this cooperation, students of the University ‘Dubna’ will participate in replacing the hadron and electromagnetic calorimeter system for the CMS collaboration (Compact Muon Solenoid). This is a part of a large-scale modernization of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, which is being implemented by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research under the cooperation agreement between the CMS collaboration and JINR. The completion of works is scheduled for 2026.

In addition to supervising practical work of students in the CMS experiment, JINR leading specialists will take part in the necessary preliminary training of young scientists.

It is assumed that there will be groups in the University that will replace each other in the CMS experiment every 1-3 months. Moreover, distant participation is planned using the computing powers of the University and JINR.

The details of this project discussed at the February meeting of the Science and Technology Council of the University, a working interfaculty group has been established for solving organizational issues, namely to make a list of departments and divisions the specialization of which will allow forming groups of students for participation in the project. It will also make a list of necessary competencies, and, accordingly, an updated list of training courses.

The competencies necessary for participation in the project include the following: digital projecting and verification of specialized electronic systems, testing of individual components and entire sectors of the calorimeter, development of software and algorithms for the analysis of experimental data, work with radiation and particle detectors, modelling of physical processes of particle collisions. Moreover, fluent English is necessary for working in such a large-scale international project both colloquial and technical.

Organizers will invite students of the Department of Physical and Technical Systems, the Department of Electronics Design for Mega-Science Facilities, the Department of Distributed Information and Computing Systems, the Department of Nuclear Physics, the Department of Nanotechnologies and New Materials, and those studying at Dubna School of Engineering and the Data Science School.
