JINR and Serbian institutes discussed IT technologies in biomedical research at joint seminar
News, 22 December 2023
On 22-24 November 2023, an online workshop “Modern Information Technologies in Biology and Medicine” took place. It was organized by MLIT and LRB JINR together the Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences and the Serbian Institute of Histology and Embryology within the Serbia-JINR Cooperation Programme. The first two days of the event were devoted to reports by specialists from three Serbian institutes and six Russian scientific centres. On the last day, a workshop was organized on the data of the Open Field behavioural test in experiments conducted in LRB.
The report topics were wide-ranging and included work on biomedical research and the adoption of modern information technologies for solving applied problems, modelling problems in radiation biology and macromolecule biophysics, new microscopy methods, bioinformatics tasks and methods of automated data processing of behavioural experiments, fluorescence microscopy, histology, electrophysiology, and tomography.
It should be noted that the event has become annual, since active work has been carried out for three years within the joint Serbia-JINR cooperation. Researchers are solving the problem of automating the brain cell recognition in histological images, as well as conducting collaborative research with the Institute of Histology and Embryology (Serbia).
The workshop was online with MLIT technical support. In the conference halls of the Institute’s laboratories, JINR employees listened to the online reports of the participants.
Students and future specialists were invited to participate in the event. The organizers were pleased to note the enthusiasm of the young people, as well as the high training level and the ability to present the results.
On the final day, there was a training course conducted by the HybriLIT Heterogeneous Computing Group (MLIT) based on the ML/DL/HPC HybriLIT ecosystem on the fundamentals of computer vision using Python libraries. As part of the lesson, a practical task was solved using the data of the Open Field behavioural test in experiments held by the LRB physiologists group.
The workshop brought together more than 40 specialists and took place in a constructive working atmosphere. The audience actively asked the speakers questions, which contributed to a favourable discussion and the development of international contacts.
The event took place with the support of the Vinča Institute Directorate, MLIT, and LRB at JINR.
