Today, on 18 October, the JINR Director met with Rector of Plekhanov Russian University of Economics (RUE) Ivan Lobanov and discussed big data processing and educational projects. The RUE delegation came to the Institute to discuss prospects for cooperation enhancement with the Joint Institute.

“Joint work of the Laboratory of Information Technologies JINR and the University has provided a good foundation to extend cooperation,” JINR Director Academician Grigory Trubnikov said. “There are many spheres in which your experience would be useful for us.” JINR representatives found the RUE expertise in the issues of budget forming one of such areas, especially applicable to large international projects.

Guests in their turn noted existing cooperation in the fields of big data: the Laboratory “Cloud technologies and Big Data analytics” headed by MLIT JINR Director Vladimir Korenkov has been operating for several years already. Moreover, the University has been using the capacities of the Institute’s big data processing hardware to process economic data. Participants of the meeting expressed the general wish to continue and extend mutually beneficial cooperation in this field.

RUE Rector Ivan Lobanov highlighted the importance of the JINR participation in training students. “When young people see the professional approach and interest sparkling in the eyes of people implementing educational and scientific programmes, it helps them not to stray from their paths,” he said. Representatives of the delegation noted that based on the successful experience of the Data Science Group and the Foresight Higher School being implemented by MLIT JINR, it was decided to create a separate faculty for training Bachelor and Master students in the fields of big data analytics, as well as a Master course in supercomputer technologies.

The parties considered opportunities for cooperation deepening in the educational realm. It regarded the participation of RUE students in the JINR Student Practice, as well as in the INTEREST online programme offering IT projects among others. It was proposed to organize online courses in financial literacy on the basis of Plekhanov University for school children of the recently opened Physics and Mathematics Lyceum named after Academician V. G. Kadyshevsky.

Within the programme of the visit to JINR, guests learned about the NICA megascience project and the factory of superconducting magnets at the VBLHEP site, as well as visited the Laboratory of Information Technologies.
