Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) hosted a meeting to sum up interim results of partnership with the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The event discussed the results of implementation of the quadripartite agreement signed in 2022 by representatives of JINR, FEFU, the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (FEB RAS), and the Government of Primorsky Krai. JINR Scientific Leader, RAS Academician Victor Matveev represented the Joint Institute at the meeting. On the same day, Victor Matveev received the title of Honorary Doctor of Far Eastern University.

It was noted at the meeting that as a result of fruitful cooperation between FEFU and JINR, significant progress was made in several key areas: implementing new educational programmes, increasing academic mobility and scientific personnel qualification, and popularising scientific knowledge not only in the Far East, but also throughout the entire Russia. One of the most important achievements of joint work was the launch of the Medical Physics Bachelor’s course at the Institute of High Technologies and Advanced Materials of the Far Eastern University in cooperation with JINR.

Victor Matveev noted that the dynamic development of the partnership an important factor contributing to the creation of modern research infrastructure. “Even in their school years, young people show interest in large scientific projects. It is important for them to see that there are opportunities for development. Our task is to show them these opportunities,” JINR Scientific Leader noted.

Director of the JINR Information Centre at FEFU Alexandra Reguzova discussed the University’s participation in the implementation of the Agreement on Strategic Cooperation and Interaction between the Governor of Primorsky Krai, JINR, FEFU, and FEB RAS.

A key aspect of the cooperation was to popularise physics among schoolchildren of the Primorsky Krai. The FEFU and JINR scientists organized a number of online lectures and a series of speeches at events such as the Vostok. Science Far Eastern Forum, the Science 0+ festival, the All-Russian Scientists to Schools Campaign, the Askold and Dir Youth Scientific and Educational Gathering, etc.

Other representatives of the parties of the Strategic Cooperation Agreement spoke at the meeting as well, summarising the interim results: Minister of Education of Primorsky Krai Elvira Shamonova, FEB RAS Academician Valentin Sergienko, and FEFU Vice-Rectors for Academic, Scientific, and International Affairs Elena Gafforova, Vladimir Nelyub, and Evgeny Vlasov, along with other representatives of the university.

At the July meeting of the FEFU Academic Council, JINR Scientific Leader, RAS Academician Victor Matveev received the title of Honorary Doctor of the Far Eastern Federal University as part of the celebration of the centenary of physics and mathematics education in the Far East. The title was awarded in recognition of many years of fruitful cooperation and for the scientist’s profound contribution to the development of physics and mathematics education at Far Eastern University. In his speech to colleagues, he highlighted scientific and educational aspects of partnership between FEFU and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research and discussed prospects for its development. Special attention was paid to the plans on constructing a megascience facility, the Russian Photon Source (RPS) Synchrotron, at FEFU on Russky Island (Vladivostok).

At the JINR Information Centre at FEFU, Victor Matveev held a meeting with young scientists, students, and teachers and a meeting with Viktor Gorchakov, former Rector of Far Eastern State University (FESU) and Chair of the Legislative Assembly of Primorsky Krai. It was with the initiative of Viktor Gorchakov that fruitful cooperation between FESU and JINR began in the 70s. In addition, during the visit, Victor Matveev toured the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography of the FEB RAS Institute of History, Archaeology, and Ethnography of Peoples of the Far East.
