News, 03 November 2022
On 3 November 2022, Assistant Director of the Laboratory of Radiation Biology, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics Gennady Nikolaevich Timoshenko suddenly passed away.
Gennady Nikolaevich Timoshenko
27.10.1946 – 03.11.2022
Gennady Nikolaevich has passed a remarkable 50-year career path in science. Since 1971, he worked at the Department of Radiation Safety and Research of JINR after his graduation from the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute. In 1995, he moved to the Department of Radiation and Radiobiological Research of JINR.
The main research area of G. N. Timoshenko was physics of protection, dosimetry and spectrometry of ionising radiation. He successfully defended his candidate (1986) and doctoral (2005) theses on this topic. Gennady Nikolaevich is the author of many scientific papers and monographs. G. N. Timoshenko took part in the design and creation of several operating accelerators at JINR and in the Member States of our Institute. Being Deputy LRB Director, he successfully combined organizational and scientific work at the Laboratory of Radiation Biology. Under his control and guidance, LRB employees conducted all radiobiological experiments, precision dosimetry of accelerated charged particles. He performed a bright series of theoretical studies on the radiation risk assessment for a spacecraft crew in different flight scenarios beyond the Earth’s magnetosphere. Russian and foreign specialists highly appreciated new approaches to the modeling of the chronic action of galactic rays at charged particle accelerators proposed by G. N. Timoshenko.
G. N. Timoshenko combined his scientific activity with teaching for many years, being Professor of the Department of Biophysics at Dubna State University more than 20 years.
G. N. Timoshenko participated in the elimination of the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster. For his scientific work, G. N. Timoshenko received the Medal of the Order “For Merit to the Fatherland” 2nd class, the Honorary Badge “Veteran of Nuclear Energy and Industry”, the Juri Gagarin Medal of the Russian Cosmonautics Federation, the Honorary JINR Diploma, the Honorary JINR Employee Title, the JINR Certificate of Honour in connection with the 60th anniversary of the Insititute. In 2020, he was awarded the Commendation of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education in connection with the 65th anniversary of JINR. In 2022, he was presented with the First JINR Prize.
The staff of the Laboratory of Radiation Biology deeply mourns the death of Gennady Nikolaevich Timoshenko, a person dear to them, a talented scientist and leader, and expresses sincere condolences to his family and friends.
