ESHEP-2017 in Portugal
Education, 28 September 2017
The European School of High-Energy Physics ESHEP-2017 organized jointly by CERN and JINR was held on 6 – 19 September 2017 in the town of Evora (Portugal).
This year the School brought together young physicists from 33 member-countries of CERN and JINR.
Courses of lectures were given in the frames of the School on contemporary issues of high energy physics such as field theory and the electroweak standard model, physics beyond the standard model, heavy ion physics, neutrino physics, and others. Among the lecturers were professors Eilam Gross (Israel), Kirill Melnikov (Germany), Sasha Davidson (France), Dmitry Kazakov (JINR), Andrey Arbuzov (JINR) and Pedro Silva (CERN). The rector of the University “Dubna” Professor Dmitry Fursaev gave the students a lecture on gravitational waves. Discussion sessions under the guidance of experienced mentors were organized each evening of the School to help young specialists master the topics of the lectures. Among these discussion leaders were JINR employees from BLTP Alexey Gladyshev and Alexander Bednyakov; discussions for students were also led by Igor Ivanov (CFTP/IST), Marco Nardecchia (CERN), Emanuel Re (CERN), and Rui Santos (ISEL).
During the School, lectures about the scientific programmes of CERN and JINR were made by CERN Director-General Fabiola Gianotti and JINR Director RAS academician V.A. Matveev. The leaders of the centres held a meeting where they discussed a number of issues of cooperation; they also participated in a round table meeting in the University of Evora.
The first such CERN-JINR joint school took place in 1970 in Finland.
