Boris Sharkov turns 75

On 11 February, Boris Sharkov, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), JINR Director’s Special Representative for Cooperation with International and Russian Scientific Organization, celebrated his 75th anniversary.
Boris Sharkov started his career in 1973 at the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute, where he worked his way up from an engineer to a senior researcher. From 1986 to 2009, Boris Sharkov worked at the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics, which he headed in 2005-2008. From 2009 to 2016, Boris Yurievich served as Scientific Director and Chair of the Management Board of the Faсility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR GmbH). In 2017, Boris Sharkov was appointed Deputy Director of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. In 2018-2021, he was a JINR Vice-Director.

Boris Sharkov takes an active part in creating the JINR Long-Term Development Strategic Plan, promotes the Institute’s international scientific and technical cooperation, the establishment of research organizations and international collaborations with JINR’s participation.
He is a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Presidium, a full member of the Academy of Europe, a member of the European Physical Society, and an Officer of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) serving as a Treasurer.
Boris Sharkov’s research interests include charged particle beam and accelerator physics, inertial fusion driven by intense heavy-ion beams, the use of high-intensity ion accelerators for thermonuclear energy, experimental plasma physics, the generation of heavy ion beams during the interaction of powerful laser radiation with an ionised medium, and others.
Academician Sharkov is the author of more than 200 scientific papers, organizer of physics conferences and schools. He was awarded the Medal of the Order “For Merit to the Fatherland”, the Academician Kurchatov Badge of Honour by Rosatom, medal “In Commemoration of the 850th Anniversary of Moscow”. He is a laureate of the RAS Veksler Prize and the Russian Government’s Prize. Boris Y. Sharkov received the title of Honorary JINR Doctor at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research.
