At general meeting of the Russian Academy of Sciences

On 8 December 2020, a general meeting of members of the Russian Academy of Sciences was opened with a scientific session “75 years of the nuclear industry. Contribution of the Academy of Sciences.” Participants considered results of and prospects for the cooperation of RAS with the State Atomic Energy Corporation “Rosatom”. The meeting was held with a minimum number of RAS members in the hall. All other participants, namely academicians, corresponding members, and RAS professors, took part in the meeting remotely.
The meeting was opened with a greeting from President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Sergeev who highlighted that the main achievement of the nuclear industry over 75 years is the guarantee of the world peace. Assistant to the President of Russia Andrey Fursenko read out the presidential greeting. Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko welcomed participants of the meeting on behalf of the Russian Government. A welcoming speech was also given by Minister of Health Mikhail Murashko who noted that in addition to the industrial sector, the nuclear industry ensures the development of medicine, in particular, of nuclear medicine methods. Alexey Likhachev, Director General of the “Rosatom” corporation, with which RAS has been cooperating since the establishment of the nuclear industry, in his greeting to participants expressed gratitude to the Russian Academy of Sciences for many years of fruitful work. RF Minister of Science and Higher Education Valery Falkov addressed the meeting and stressed that the history of scientific and technological development has always been made within the walls of the Russian Academy of Sciences; he thanked RAS members for the active expert activity. In the frames of the event participants of the meeting delivered scientific reports. It should be noted that more than 1,000 participants registered for the event.
JINR Vice-Director Boris Sharkov made a report “Explosions, powerful shock waves, and extreme states of matter”.
“Dear colleagues, this report was supposed to be given by Vladimir Evgenievich Fortov,” Academician Sharkov started his speech. “As you know, he passed away nine days ago, and co-authors entrusted me to make this report on behalf of Vladimir Evgenievich. I received a huge amount of material from him, so everything I am going to speak about today will be only the tip of the iceberg. I have preserved the selection and layout of the material authored by Vladimir Evgenievich.”
