On 25 March, a delegation of the Arab Atomic Energy Agency (AAEA) headed by Director General Salem Hamdi took part for the first time in the session of the Committee of Plenipotentiary Representatives of the Governments of the JINR Member States as special guests. The AAEA delegation also included Director of the Scientific Documentation Department Nahla Nasr and Head of the Scientific Affairs Directorate Daw Mosbah.
Dr Salem Hamdi in his speech at the CP JINR session congratulated the Joint Institute on the 65th anniversary and spoke about the status and plans for the development of the JINR-AAEA cooperation, “Let me convey sincere congratulations to the Directorate, the staff, and the Member States of the Institute on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. Under its motto “Science bringing nations together”, JINR sets an example of how a world-renowned scientific centre that conducts both theoretical and experimental fundamental research and successfully combines them with the development and implementation of the latest technologies and with the educational field.
The Institute has a successful international effective collaboration and is a leader in a number of scientific realms. JINR achievements in discovering many new super-heavy elements of the Periodic Table are striking, and we consider these achievements a victory for all humanity.
It is a great honour to me to express my deep gratitude to JINR on behalf of the Arab Atomic Energy Agency for the continuous support of the AAEA under the framework of the memorandum of understanding and further protocols signed between our organizations.
We highly appreciate the Institute’s intention to open a JINR Information Centre and Virtual Laboratories in the AAEA headquarters and we are looking forward to working together to make these plans real as a result of our fruitful cooperation. We will communicate and coordinate closely with the JINR staff regarding the first steps to be taken in order to establish the IC and the VL in the AAEA headquarters.
The AAEA sees JINR as an important asset for the world in the fields of nuclear physics.
We are working closely with JINR to pave the way to install the IC and the VL in Tunisia in the AAEA headquarters where it will be easily accessible to all Arab countries since the AAEA is the technical arm of the League of Arab States in the fields of nuclear science and technology.
I wish a bright future and all the success to JINR! We are looking forward to the close cooperation of both institutions, which will bring our nations together.”
It should be reminded that the JINR-AAEA cooperation dates back to the visit of AAEA Director General Abdelmajid Mahjoub in the summer of 2015. The cooperation got active development at the end of 2016 when a Memorandum of understanding was signed by the AAEA and JINR the goal of which was to enhance cooperation of JINR with the countries of the League of Arab States. A few months later during a working visit to JINR of an AAEA delegation headed by Director General Salem Hamdi in April 2017, the first protocol to this Memorandum was signed. The 2nd JINR-AAEA Coordination Committee took place in December 2018 on the sidelines of the 14th Arab Conference on Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy. Following the results of the last meeting with JINR in February 2021, the AAEA expressed its intention to open a JINR Information Centre in its headquarters in Tunisia.
