59th meeting of PAC for Condensed Matter Physics

News, 20 June 2024

On 24-25 June, the 59th meeting of the Programme Advisory Committee for Condensed Matter Physics (PAC CMP) will take place at the JINR International Conference Centre. During the meeting, the committee members will discuss the status of JINR research facilities, prospects for the development of current and new projects, and the Institute’s scientific results. As part of the poster session, young scientists will make presentations on research in condensed matter physics.

Programme of PAC meeting for Condensed Matter Physics

Chair of the PAC for Condensed Matter Physics Dénes Lajos Nagy will discuss the implementation of the recommendations of the previous PAC CMP meeting. JINR Vice-Director Latchesar Kostov will present a report on the Resolution of the 135th session of the Scientific Council (February 2024) and the decisions of the Committee of Plenipotentiaries of the Governments of the JINR Member States (March 2024).

Director of the Laboratory of Neutron Physics at JINR Egor Lychagin will open the scientific programme with an update on the project of a new neutron source. FLNP JINR Deputy Director for Scientific Work Bagdaulet Mukhametuly will discuss plans to resume the operation of the IBR-2 Reactor and restart the user programme.

The report by Head of the Scientific and Experimental Department of the IBR-2 Spectrometer Complex Viktor Bodnarchuk will provide an update on the modernisation of the IBR-2 instruments. A senior engineer at the FLNP JINR Diffractometry Sector Evgeny Lukin will report on the status of the DN-6 Diffractometer aimed at the studies of materials at ultrahigh pressures.

A proposal to open a new project, “High-sensitivity sensors based on molecular recognition for virus detection”, will be put forward by Deputy Head of the FLNR Nanocentre for Scientific Work, Candidate of Chemistry Alexander Nechaev. A report on the status of the project “Protection against physical and chemical stresses with tardigrade proteins (TARDISS)” will be presented by a junior researcher at the DLNP JINR Sector of Molecular Genetics of the Cell Mikhail Zarubin.

Researcher at the BLTP JINR Sector of Methods of Quantum Field Theory in Complex Systems Georgy Kalagov will talk about the functional renormalisation group approach to some problems of condensed matter physics. At the end of the first day, a researcher at the FLNP JINR Department of Diffractometry Natalia Samoylova will make a report “Study of phase transitions in cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries”.

On 25 June, a meeting of the Committee members with the JINR Directorate will take place, ending with a competition of reports by young scientists. The event will conclude with the preparation of PAC CMP recommendations and the formation of proposals for the agenda of the next meeting.
