From 9 to 30 January, the second JINR-RSA School was held in iThemba LABS, the RSA. A large delegation of JINR representatives took part in the event. The School is organized by the Southern African Institute for Nuclear Technology and Sciences and supervised by Prof. Richard Newman.

32 students and postgraduates from 13 Southern African universities selected out of 66 candidates took part in the School. One of the objectives of the School is to select participants for the upcoming Student Practice in the Joint Institute scheduled this year for June.

8 staff members of BLTP, VBLHEP, DLNP, the UC, who had come to the RSA at the end of January, took part in the School. Head of the JINR International Cooperation Department D. V. Kamanin addressed the participants with a welcoming speech. BLTP Director D. I. Kazakov delivered a lecture on modern particle physics, and a BLTP staff member T. M. Shneidman told students about theoretical models of atomic nuclei. Yu. A. Panebrattsev delivered a lecture course “Detectors and processing of signals in nuclear research”. VBLHEP staff members P. D. Semchukov and K. V. Klygina organized a workshop on processing signals in nuclear and physical experiments and the virtual laboratory of nuclear fission. N. E. Sidorov read a lecture on colliders and the NICA complex being constructed in JINR. V. V. Belaga and P. D. Semchukov held workshops on the analysis of experimental data with the use of ROOT. A DLNP staff member and UC Deputy Director A. S. Zhemchugov delivered a lecture course on Monte Carlo modelling of processes in experiments on particle physics and organized workshops on the GEANT software complex. The lecture programme of the School was concluded with the lecture by UC Director S. Z. Pakuliak in which he spoke about JINR and the UC educational opportunities for students from universities of the JINR Member States.

The participation of JINR employees in the School allows them to meet students directed to the Institute for Practice and enhances opportunities for spreading information among RSA universities about JINR opportunities and the progress towards implementation of joint scientific projects of JINR and the Republic of South Africa.
