Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev signed the order “On holding in 2019 the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements”.

The UN General Assembly proclaimed 2019 the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements. There was a reason for it: the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the Periodic Law of chemical elements is celebrated in 2019. The initiative to hold the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements was introduced by the Russian Academy of Sciences, the “Mendeleev Russian Chemical Society”, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of RF as well as Russian and foreign scientists.

The initiative was supported by numerous countries and international organizations as well as more than 80 national academies of sciences and scientific communities, including the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), the European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences (EuCheMS), the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and others. Dmitry Medvedev became the head of the organizing committee of the International Year of the Periodic Table in Russia. Heads of federal bodies of the executive branch of the government, departments and leading scientific organizations became members of the organizing committee.

A festive opening ceremony will be held on 29 January 2019 in France (Paris), in the UNESCO headquarters. The same ceremony will be held in Russia, Moscow, on 6 February 2019 and will be dedicated to the Day of Russian Science and birthday of Dmitry Ivanovich Mendeleev. In the frames of the International Year of the Periodic Table, more than 500 popular-science and educational events are planned in Russia to attract school students, students and the youth to science and its achievements. A special nomination for popularization of chemistry has been added in the national award “For loyalty to science” of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education this year.
