On 29 January 2022, Valery Vasilievich Burov, an outstanding Russian theoretical physicist, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, Chief Researcher of the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics of JINR, passed away.

In 1971, Valery Vasilievich graduated from Far Eastern Federal University (Vladivostok) with a degree in theoretical physics and elementary particle physics. In 1973-1977, he studied as a postgraduate at Lomonosov Moscow State University. Since 1977, he worked at BLTP JINR. In 1978, V. V. Burov defended his PhD Thesis. In 1990, he defended the doctoral dissertation. In 1994, he received the academic title of Professor. In 1992-1998, Valery Vasilievich was the Deputy Director of BLTP, and in 1998, he was elected as the Head of the Sector. Since 2019, he worked as a chief researcher.

V. V. Burov is a recognized specialist in the field of relativistic nuclear physics. He has carried out large cycles of studies of electron scattering on nuclei with large momentum transfer, cumulative effect, he owns the fundamental works on the study of meson and quark degrees of freedom in nuclei. Recently, he actively used the Bethe-Salpeter approach to describe relativistic effects in the elastic and inelastic electron scattering on deuteron as well as in three-nucleon systems (helium, tritium). He has published more than 180 scientific papers, including several major reviews. In 1982, as part of a team of authors, he was awarded the JINR first prize. In his research, Valery Vasilyevich collaborated a lot with scientists from Japan, Taiwan, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Bulgaria, Ukraine and other countries.

Valery Vasilyevich was widely involved in the organization of scientific conferences and schools for young scientists. He was one of the main organizers (co-Chairman of the Organizing Committee and editor of proceedings) of a series of international seminars on high energy physics problems and quantum chromodynamics (the International Baldin Seminar). From 1991 until recently, V. V. Burov was a member of the International Advisory Committee of the Asia Pacific Conference on Few-Body Problems in Physics.

V. V. Burov was actively engaged in teaching. He lectured at the Tver State University, Lomonosov Moscow State University, and Cairo University. In 2000 and 2022, he worked as a visiting professor at Osaka University, in 2006-2007 and 2009, at National Taiwan University. 6 PhD theses and more than 10 diploma theses were defended under the leadership of Valery Vasilievich Burov.

Being the BLTP Deputy Director, V. V. Burov made a significant contribution to the development of the BLTP international scientific cooperation, particularly, to the construction of the BLTP computing cluster (KRAST complex) as part of the Heisenberg-Landau programme. At different times, he was a member of the Science and Technology and Dissertation Councils of BLTP and VBLHEP, a member of the PEPAN editorial board.

A broad professional outlook, integrity, responsibility, and at the same time goodwill and tact brought Valery Vasilyevich Burov well-deserved respect and authority among colleagues and friends. We will always keep a bright memory of him.
