The data storage system of the SC “Govorun” is the best IT solution for data centers
News, 17 December 2020
For the high-speed data storage system developed for the “Govorun” supercomputer of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research and implemented in 2020, RSC Group has received the prestigious Russian DC Awards 2020 in “The Best IT Solution for Data Centers” nomination at the awards ceremony held on 10 December 2020 in Moscow.
As reported in a press release of RSC Group, the use of RSC’s disaggregated composable architecture allowed creating a unique high-speed data storage system with leading characteristics, i.e. the R/W speed of the parallel file system exceeds 300 GB/s, for the “Govorun” supercomputer installed at JINR. The achievement of such indicators became possible only due to RSC’s comprehensive hardware and software solutions, since the use of standard technologies with separate storage systems would involve much greater costs.
The unique solution for a storage-on-demand system enables the re-configuration of a specific storage system with the required properties, such as capacity, speed, file system, persistence, reliability and security, for each workload task on the supercomputer, which would be impossible to achieve with a standard approach to building storage systems for high-performance computing (HPC).
At the same time, RSC’s patented technology for cross-connecting network drives and N+M redundancy of storage servers ensure high reliability of the storage system.
JINR supercomputer named after N.N. Govorun
The world’s first hyper-converged “Govorun” supercomputer, implemented using 100% hot water cooling, holds 22nd position in the current edition of Global IO500 Rating of the best performing HPC-level storage systems (as it was announced at the world’s largest supercomputer conference SC20 in November 2020). Such remarkable results were achieved due to the unique distributed and composable system “RSC Storage on-Demand”, which is based on Intel® SSDs and Intel® Optane SSDs with NVMe interfaces. It is noteworthy that when the “Govorun” supercomputer was commissioned at JINR, it was ranked 9th in Global IO500 Rating in June 2018. The system also has 11th position in the current Top50 list of the most powerful supercomputers in Russia and the CIS (September 2020).
