On 23 July, the Arab Republic of Egypt (ARE), a Member State of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, celebrates the Revolution Day. It is a state holiday dedicated to the anniversary of the July Revolution that took place in Egypt in 1952.

Scientific contacts between JINR and national research centres of Egypt has a long-standing history dating back to the late 1960s. Fruitful scientific cooperation of Egyptian physicists with JINR scientists has been continuing to strengthen and expanding since then. It resulted in the increase in the status of the Arab Republic of Egypt from associate membership to a full-fledged Member of JINR at the CP session in Bulgaria in November 2021.

Since December 2020, one of the first JINR Information Centres has been working at the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology of Egypt (ASRT).

Egyptian scientists take part in 12 themes of the JINR Topical Plan for 2023. Moreover, there are ten joint JINR-ARE projects at the Institute. In July 2022, a research team from Egypt visited the Laboratory of Neutron Physics JINR to implement the ASRT-JINR project called Molecular Modelling and Experimental Neutron Scattering of Interactions of Biomolecules with Graphene Substrates in Condensed Matters. A team of FLNP JINR scientists jointly with Egyptian colleagues checked the elemental composition of bottom sediments in the Nile Valley and soils on the banks of the river. In general, the results of the work allow stating that the river is clean. On 20 June, the results obtained by researchers of the FLNP Group of Neutron Activation Analysis and their colleagues from Egyptian Mansoura University were announced. FLNP physicists studied rock samples from various gold mines in Egypt and determined the most promising deposits.

Educational cooperation is actively developing. From 12 to 16 September 2022, JINR hosted a scientific school for students from the ASRT Children’s University. On 28 November, as part of the Summer Multidisciplinary University “Russia-Africa”, a group of students from Egypt came to the Joint Institute for an excursion. At the end of April 2023, leaders and specialists of research and educational organizations of Egypt took part in the 22nd JEMS international training programme. From 15 May to 2 June, JINR hosted the first stage of the International Student Practice for Egyptian students and young scientists. On 18 May, an international workshop on the development of the UC JINR project “Open information and educational environment to support fundamental and applied interdisciplinary research at JINR” was held. The event took place with the participation of representatives of universities of the Member States and Associate Members of the Institute.

Over the past year, a number of working visits and high-level meetings took place. On 1 September, in Cairo, Head of the International Cooperation Department Dmitry Kamanin met with Professor Mohamed Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Arab Republic of Egypt. On 19 October, an online work meeting of Plenipotentiary Representative of the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt in JINR Mahmoud Sakr with Vice-Director Latchesar Kostov took place.

From 21 to 24 November 2022, meetings of the Finance Committee and the Committee of Plenipotentiary Representatives of the Governments of the JINR Member States took place in Hurghada. At the CP session, a draft of the Seven-Year Plan for the Development of JINR in 2024 – 2030 was presented for the first time and approved by the CP Members. The 12th meeting of the Joint Coordination Committee on the cooperation between the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research cooperation was held alongside the session.

On 17 – 18 December 2022, a JINR delegation led by Special Representative of the Director of the Institute for cooperation with international and Russian scientific organizations Boris Sharkov took part in the Forum for Foreign Graduates of Soviet and Russian Universities, Representatives of the Education System in the Middle East and Africa in Cairo. On 11 – 15 February 2023, a JINR delegation led by Deputy Head of the Department of Science Organization Activities Alexey Zhemchugov visited Egypt to participate in the 7th Cairo International Exhibition of Innovation. On 24 April, Professor Amr El-hag Ali, Chairman of the Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority (EAEA) and Member of the JINR Scientific Council, arrived at the Joint Institute at the invitation of the JINR Directorate.
