Yesterday, on 4 March 2014, ambassadors of 11 Latin American countries visited the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research – international intergovernmental organization in Dubna, Moscow region.

JINR Director RAS Academician Victor Matveev and JINR Chief Scientific Secretary Nikolai Russakovich told the guests about the main directions of scientific research conducted in seven major research laboratories by scientists and experts from 18 countries of JINR Member States, as well as by physicists from Hungary, Egypt, Germany, Italy, Serbia, France, Republic of South Africa and some other countries. Research is successfully conducted at the Institute on the project of the new superconducting collider NICA, as well as in establishment of the heavy ion complex DRIBs-III. Upgrading of spectrometers of the reactor IBR-2M included in the 20-year European strategic programme for research in the fields of neutron scattering is being held according to the schedule. The concept of the Seven-Year Plan for the Development of JINR 2010–2016 provides concentration of resources for upgrading of accelerator and reactor base of the Institute and integration of its basic facilities in the common European research infrastructure. JINR Assistant Director Alexander Ruzaev acquainted the ambassadors of the Latin American countries with innovative products created by Dubna scientists.

The diplomats were shown the accelerator complex, intended to accelerate colliding beams of heavy ions. It is being established in the Veksler and Baldin Laboratory of High Energy Physics; they also visited the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions, where new super heavy elements of the Mendeleev Periodic Table of Elements are synthesized.

It is noteworthy that the Republic of Cuba was the first JINR Member State in Latin America.

– The main purpose of our visit – said Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Cuba to the Russian Federation Mr. Emilio Lozada Garsia – is further development and enhancement of cooperation between countries of Latin America with the international research center in Dubna. We are strongly interested in developing nuclear technology, the scientific fields, which Dubna is famous for. Your experience is very important for the development of science in Latin America, training of our young scientists. We do appreciate the high quality of your education. I hope that Cuban scientists can contribute to development of our common research center.
