3 March marks the Day of Liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman yoke of the Republic of Bulgaria, a JINR Member State.

The Republic of Bulgaria joined the Joint Institute since its foundation in 1956. Bulgaria takes an active part in all the JINR scientific activities. In 2021, the Joint Institute celebrated the Year of Bulgaria in JINR that coincided with the 65th anniversary of the Institute. The November session of the Committee of Plenipotentiaries of the Institute took place in Sofia as part of festive events. President of Bulgaria Rumen Radev personally participated in the festive meeting of the CP JINR session. One of the important achievements of the session was the signing of the Sofia Declaration proclaiming the value of international scientific and technological integration. In the same year, the JINR Information Centre, the first in the European Union, began its work at Sofia University.
