On 17 December, these words opened an international seminar dedicated to the 80th anniversary of JINR Scientific Leader, a Member of the RAS Presidium, Academician Victor Anatolievich Matveev. The event organized in a hybrid format brought together more than 200 participants.
JINR Director Grigory Trubnikov delivered a congratulatory address on behalf of the JINR multinational team signed by representatives of 19 Member States. “Victor Anatolievich has held the JINR Director post for almost 10 years. Victor Matveev took up this office at a difficult time for the international centre. The Joint Institute has changed during the years of his leadership,” the JINR Director said in the congratulatory address. Some reports of the seminar dedicated to the NICA megascience project, the Baikal-GVD neutrino telescope, the “Govorun” supercomputer highlighted the development of the JINR scientific infrastructure during the leadership of Matveev. All these projects have significantly progressed thanks to the active and efficient support of Victor Matveev. It was emphasised that under the leadership of Academician Matveev at JINR, the budget of the Institute had increased several times and the approach to financing projects had changed, which also had a positive impact on the development of projects.
Grigory Trubnikov highlighted that “the jubilee of Victor Matveev is a great holiday for everyone”: Dubna, Troitsk, where he headed the RAS Troitsk Science Centre for a long time, the Baksan neutrino observatory, which was developed with the most active support of the scientist, the Russian Academy of Sciences. “It is symbolic that the 80th anniversary of Victor Anatolievich is celebrated together with the 65th anniversary of our international Institute,” JINR Director Grigory Trubnikov said.
At the seminar, President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Sergeev congratulated Victor Matveev. RAS Academician Victor Matveev headed the Physical Sciences Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences for several years. “This Division is a flagship,” Alexander Sergeev emphasised, “The RAS trusted the management of the Division to Victor Matveev as he is a person who calmly and thoughtfully conducts business.” Speaking about progress in the development of a number of studies in which Victor Matveev actively took part, RAS President Sergeev highlighted, “No matter in what scientific directions you worked, they all were a success. Our country holds leading positions in the fields of high-energy physics, neutrino physics, physics of heavy-ion accelerators thanks to your wisdom as a leader who can strike a balance between different opinions. Victor Anatolievich is the treasure of physical science.”
Reports dedicated to the scientific interests of Victor Matveev were delivered at the seminar. Thus, participants discussed anomalous non-conservation of fermion numbers in dense fermion environment, chiral magnetic effect. In the 1980s, Victor Matveev worked on these studies. Participants also discussed experiments in neutrino physics, the search for dark matter, Victor Matveev’s contribution to the CMS experiment at CERN.
Colleagues, students, and friends of Victor Anatolievich who participated in the festive seminar highlighted several times his brilliant organizational skills and wisdom in making decisions.
