Grigory Trubnikov on global climate agenda at Technoprom-2021
News, 25 August 2021
From 25 to 27 August, one of the central events of the Year of Science and Technology in Russia takes place in Novosibirsk – VIII International Forum of Technological Development “Technoprom-2021”.
On the first day of the Forum, JINR Director RAS Academician Grigory Trubnikov was one of the speakers of the plenary meeting “Technological transformation as a basis for the transition to a “green economy”. The main topic of the discussion was the creation of so-called carbon polygons aimed to track the amount of greenhouse gases and other parameters significant for climate change in forest areas and agricultural lands.
Participants of the discussion noted that scientists and politicians are still arguing about what has a greater impact on global warming: the human factor or processes occurring in the hydro- and lithosphere of the Earth.
“The issue of the root cause of climate changes is crucially important,” Grigory Trubnikov noted in his speech. “Why do all the countries are raising the alarm now: anthropogenic climate changes are growing exponentially, and natural changes occur very slowly – for dozens and hundreds of millions of years. I believe that the main task of science, humanity at large, countries that consider themselves responsible for sustainable development is to suppress the high gradient of changes related to anthropogenic impact, first of all. It means it is necessary to stop everything that may lead to an increase in catastrophic consequences. But at the same time, it is important to adapt the civilisation to the changes that are taking place.”
The JINR Director highlighted that nuclear physics is absolutely ready to help climate research and the fight against anthropogenic climate changes. As an example of a scientific project able to help the world track climate changes and support the cleanliness of the environment, he cited the Baikal Neutrino Telescope, a megaproject being implemented with the support of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia by 5 countries – the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Russia, and Slovakia. The Baikal-GVD does not only perform the physical task of registering neutrinos coming from the depths of active galaxies but also serves as the world-largest ecological monitor of the biggest freshwater reservoir and provides an online picture of changes in both biological diversity and water composition and quality.
Grigory Trubnikov summed up that all scientific realms without exception are now ready and would contribute to the overall global climate agenda.
“In order to try to establish a balance and justice in terms of economic sanctions, it is necessary to unite efforts of scientists and give the most open and transparent image of ecological changes both in the world’s oceans and on land territories. This is an invaluable material for those organizations that take decisions regarding economic regimes and innovations,” the JINR Director added.
In the way of conclusion, Grigory Trubnikov also noted that to date it is a trend among young people to follow ecological agenda and this should also be embedded in the idea of creating world-class campuses.
VEB.RF Chief Economist Andrei Klepach moderated the discussion. Speakers of the event were Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation Valery Falkov, Governor of the Novosibirsk region Andrey Travnikov, Chairman of the Siberian Branch of RAS Valentin Parmon, Chairman of the Skolkovo Foundation Arkady Dvorkovich, Deputy Minister of Energy of Russia Pavel Sorokin, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of Russia Alexey Besprozvannykh, and Director of the Department for Competition, Energy Efficiency, and Environment of the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia Peter Bobylev.
On the first day of the Technoprom-2021 Forum, JINR Director RAS Academician Grigory Trubnikov took part in the ceremony of laying the first stone in the construction of the megascience facility SKIF – Siberian Circular Photon Source – in the science city of Koltsovo. Moreover, the JINR Director studied major stands of the Technoprom-2021 exhibition, namely the stand of the Novosibirsk region, the Final of the Olympiad in 3D Technologies, and the Siberian Venture Fair.
