On 8 December 2017, Nguyen Manh Shat, a great man, our friend and colleague, Head of the national group of Vietnam in JINR, Leading Researcher of the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems on behalf of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, passed away from sudden cardiac arrest.

Nguyen Manh Shat started his work at the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems of JINR in 1971 after graduating from Lvov Polytechnic National University. His scientific activity was connected with development and application of electronics for automation of physical experiments conducted in DLNP and other JINR laboratories. After defense of Candidate thesis in 1976, Nguyen Manh Shat continued his scientific work in Vietnam and DLNP JINR. Since 1983, he was appointed Director of the Accelerator Laboratory of Hanoi Centre for Nuclear Physics where along with scientific activity he successfully trained scientific staff.
In 1994, Nguyen Manh Shat returned at JINR to continue his work in DLNP. He is a co-author of more than 70 scientific papers.
Nguyen Manh Shat successfully combined scientific activity with scientific-organizational work: he was a member of the JINR Scientific Council, a member of Science and Technology Council of DLNP, Chairman of the JINR Financial Committee on behalf of Vietnam as well as Head of the Vietnamese national group in JINR.
For his great contribution to development and strengthening of scientific and technical cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Nguyen Manh Shat was awarded the Order of Friendship of the Russian Federation and the Medal of Honor of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research for his merits to science in JINR.
A kind, righteous man and a wonderful friend departed, a man who devoted his life to science development in Vietnam and JINR. The cherished memory about Nguyen Manh Shat will remain forever in our hearts.
