19 July 2024 marked the start of the 28th Summer Scientific School, organized by the JINR Association of Young Scientists and Specialists (AYSS JINR) at the JINR Lipnya Tourist Resort. The three-day programme of the event includes lectures, round tables, sports and cultural events, and a masterclass.

Among the participants are 55 representatives of scientific youth under 35, including young researchers and specialists of laboratories and departments of the Joint Institute, Tensor Plant, and the Sarov Branch of Lomonosov Moscow State University.

The upcoming lectures will provide school participants with the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the scientific, technical, and historical aspects of the Institute’s life. Two round tables will take place for young scientists to discuss topical issues of social infrastructure of organizations and the urban environment with the Directorate and heads of infrastructure facilities and departments of the Institute, representatives of the Medical Unit No. 9 of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency of Russia and scientific and industrial enterprises of Dubna. In addition to round tables and lectures, the agenda includes networking sessions, a master class, quizzes, sports and board games, and much more.

Lipnya-2024 started on Friday, 19 July, with Science Speed Dating, a traditional team building excercise, during which the participants got to learn about each other and introduce their scientific endeavours. Such a format encourages the establishment of scientific connections between representatives of laboratories and departments, thus helping find opportunities for cooperation within the Institute.

Summer School Co-Chair, an FLNP JINR researcher Alexander Nezvanov welcomed the participants and delivered a presentation explaining how the event will be organized. Alexander noted that the majority of participants of the several latest Lipnya Schools are newcomers. In the future, they continue to take part in the AYSS activities and events, including the Alushta and AYSS Conferences, the Institute’s grant and prize competitions for the Association members, and housing support programmes for young scientists.

The programme of the event’s first day continued with four plenary reports. A lecture entitled “Why is it important for a scientist to come out of their introvert cocoon?” was presented by Head of the UC JINR Social Communications Group Anastasia Sushchevich. A MLIT JINR researcher Igor Pelevanyuk discussed the Institute’s useful online services. JINR Deputy Chief Scientific Secretary Alexey Zhemchugov delivered a lecture on the history of the creation of the Joint Institute. Galina Orlova, a leading researcher at the International Centre for the History and Sociology of World War II and Its Consequences at the Higher School of Economics, delivered a report titled “The history of the current atomic project in ten theses and counter-analyses”.

The event will last until 21 July. You can find links to join the event online in the AYSS JINR Telegram channel.
