Mathematical modeling becomes a productive force

The International Conference "Mathematical Modeling and Computational Physics" (MMCP 2013) was held on the second week of July in JINR. It was organized by LIT JINR, the RAS Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics and Slovak scientific centers – the Institute of Experimental Physics, the Technical University, and the Pavol Jozef Safarik University. This scientific forum continues traditions of conferences on mathematical modeling, numerical methods and computational physics which were started in 1964 in JINR. On the opening day of the conference some of its participants and organizers shared their opinions with a correspondent of the JINR weekly newspaper "Dubna: science, community, progress".
Scientific Secretary of the Conference LIT Deputy Director T.A. Strizh: Every two years we hold conferences on important and actual directions developed in our laboratory – mathematical modeling and everything that relates to issues of algorithmization and programming of tasks that are solved in our Institute and Member States. This conference is traditional for us, it originate with the establishment of LCTA. We hold this conference in turn with our Slovak colleagues since 1996. We attempt to involve all interested and concerned: this year we have rather large conference – 187 reports were presented and 230 participants came. There are five plenary sections, covering all the areas which we are engaged in, and which are of interest today in a view of a new computing power available to us, to the Member States and to Russia as a member country.
The Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics of the Russian Academy of Sciences was a co-organizer of the conference for the first time this year, and its Director RAS Academician Boris Nikolaevich Chetvertushkin made a one of opening reports. This is very famous institute which solve tasks of the world and even higher level in the fields of mathematical modeling and numerical methods. As is known, the Russian School of Mathematics is very strong, it is recognized around the world, and we try to correspond to it. At the conference special attention will be attended to issues of application of modern computing techniques – not just CPU, but GPU-accelerators which allow to build a hybrid architecture and extend possibilities of computational methods and result generation. This is very complicated task because it requires not only parallel programming, but also specific languages which are not ordinary and not easy to understand, but we must strive for this. It is good that our young scientists who are engaged in these issues will make presentations at the conference. Moreover, it is of particular interest for data processing of modern experiments in high energy physics and not only these fields. One such example is the CBM experiment, which is built on the FAIR accelerator. Results achieved by our young scientists who develop a CMB software show that application of fast algorithms for modern computing allows us to obtain an acceleration of nearly 500 times for some of them. That’s what convergence of mathematical methods and modern computer technology provides.
The agenda of the conference included discussion of issues of distributed computing, mathematical methods for modeling complex systems, computer algebra and quantum computing, computational biophysics and bioinformatics. Our colleagues from Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Germany, Mongolia, Romania, Slovakia, and many Russian research centers and universities participated in the conference. There will be parallel sessions, to be populated by five days, and I’m sure we’ll work well and efficiently these days, we get new knowledge, share experiences and discuss future plans for future cooperation. We are in for five very busy days, and I’m sure we’ll work well and efficiently these days, we’ll get a new knowledge, share experiences and discuss plans for further prospective cooperation.
