At meetings of the PAC for Particle Physics
News, 03 February 2014
The 40th meeting of the Programme Advisory Committee for Particle Physics was held on 27-28 January 2014 in the International Conference Hall. Chairman of the PAC for Particle Physics Professor I. Tserruya reported on implementation of the recommendations of the previous meeting of the PAC for Particle Physics. JINR Vice-Director R. Lednický spoke about the resolution of the 114th Session of the JINR Scientific Council and the decisions of the sessions of the Committee of Plenipotentiaries of the JINR Member States which were held respectively in September and November 2013.
The meeting included reports of directors on scientific activity of laboratories and prospects for further development.
LIT Director V. Korenkov noted that the main purpose of the laboratory is to provide a full range of IT solutions for JINR, and this activity is conducted in several directions. Moreover, LIT participate in software development of projects LHC and NICA. In total 7368 computers are supported for 3884 users.
DLNP Director V. Bednyakov spoke about research, including neutrino physics. He noted here that DLNP does not have its basic facilities in the fields of particle physics, but experiments on Lake Baikal and the Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant can be considered as such. JINR participation in these experiments was detailed.
VBLHEP Director V. Kekelidze presented a complete overview of experiments in which the laboratory staff members are involved – the so called home experiments, guest experiments, and, of course, the accelerator complex NICA which is being developed in VBLHEP. Figures were announced: the budget of experiments, the number of participants, the number of master’s and doctoral dissertations on these subjects, the results of research.
The next set of reports was devoted to the NICA complex. The following topics were discussed: progress towards realization of the Nuclotron-NICA project (A. Sidorin), prioritization and selection of specific measurements with the BM@N and MPD detectors (A. Sorin), information from the Nuclotron-M/NICA Machine Advisory Committee (A. Feschenko), progress towards realization of the MPD project (V. Kolesnikov), results of the Nuclotron runs (E. Strokovski), realization of the BM@N project (V. Ladygin).
The PAC continued with reports on scientific results obtained by JINR groups in experiments at the LHC and during upgrading of facilities. A. Vodopyanov presented a report on a project "Research and development for the ALICE Photon Spectrometer modernization» and proposals for its continuation. Two new projects were presented, poster presentations of young scientists and the scientific report of A. Bednyakov "Vacuum stability in the Standard Model: three-loop analysis ".
