New members and a Chairman of the Science Council under the RF Ministry of Science and Education were elected

On 14 November 2017, the 19th Meeting of the Science Council under the RF Ministry of Science and Education was held. The activities of the Council in 2015 – 2017 and changes in its membership were discussed. Olga Vasilyeva, RF Minister of Science and Education, and Grigory Trubnikov, Deputy Minister of Science and Education, participated in the Meeting. This is reported on the Council’s website.

Yuri Kovalyov, an astrophysicist, Corresponding Member of RAS, was elected as Council Chairman. A historian Askold Ivanchik, Corresponding Member of RAS, became Vice-Chairman. 14 new members and 4 new members of the young scientists section were added to the Membership of the Science Council. Alexander Vasilevsky, Dina Dudina, Alexandra Kalashnikova, and Alexander Tarasov entered the Young Scientists Section of the Science Council.

Elizaveta Bonch-Osmolovskaya, Olga Vinogradova, Mikhail Volkov, Elena Zagaynova, Ivan Kulikov, Alexey Lopatin, Alexander Lutovinov, Alexander Moldovan, Olga Solomina, Alexander Sorin, Mikhail Tsfasman, Eugeny Sheval, Anna Scherbina, Maria Yudkevich entered the membership of the Science Council.

Moreover, the Council supported the initiative of the government on significant increase of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR) budget in 2018. Scientists appealed to the RF State Duma to document this decision while adopting the budget in 2018. The Council members believe that it will be effective to allocate not less than a half of additional funds for financing the competition of initiative basic research projects as this competition has proved to be the most effective measure of increasing the share of Russian scientists’ publications in the world science.
