Lecture “What are extremophiles and how will they help save humanity?”

Seminars

The JINR Universal Public Library invites everyone interested to a lecture “What are extremophiles and how will they help save humanity?”. An employee of the Sector of Molecular Genetics of Cell of the Dzhelepov Laboratory of Nuclear Problems JINR Alena Yakhnenko will deliver the lecture.

In the most mysterious places of the planet such as underground mineral springs, there are microorganisms that have adapted to life in harsh conditions. In one of such springs, employees of the Sector have discovered a new species of extremophilic bacteria in an unused part of the tunnel of the Baksan Neutrino Observatory.

Using genome-wide nanopore sequencing methods and a biochemical profiling system, specialists have decoded the genome of the bacterium and studied its metabolism. It turned out that the new bacterium is resistant to heavy metals and is able to process methanol.

Alena Yakhnenko will explain how such properties of new microorganisms can be used in biotechnology and bioremediation of soils and waters.

Date and time: 19 November 2022, at 6:00 PM. Admission is free.

Venue: JINR Universal Public Library (13/7, Blokhintsev str.).
