27 April marks the national Freedom Day of the Republic of South Africa (RSA), an Associate Member of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The JINR-RSA cooperation, dating back to 1993, has expanded into the associate membership of South Africa in the Joint Institute in 2005 and continues to develop successfully.

Both parties are actively participating in scientific visits and joint research. In October 2023, the 5th Meeting of the BRICS Working Group on Research Infrastructure (BRICS GRAIN) took place in Stellenbosch, South Africa. The Republic of South Africa hosts the annual RSA-JINR summer educational programmes. Last year, JEMS-23, one of the JINR training programmes for administrative and scientific personnel, was organized exclusively for participants from South Africa. The JINR Information Centre is now being prepared for opening at iThemba LABS, the country’s accelerator centre.
