First graduation from Yandex.Lyceum in Dubna
News, 09 July 2021
On 26 June, in Lyceum No. 6, 21 Dubna school students received certificates on successful completion of the Yandex.Lyceum.
Dubna joined the Yandex.Lyceum project in 2019. The start of the programme was preceded by the joint work of Yandex, the Physics and Mathematics Open Classroom of Dubna, Lyceum No.6, and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The training programme is designed for two years: in the first year, students master programming in Python, and in the second year they perform independent projects.
Training in the Yandex.Lyceum requires lots of effort from its students. And it is all the more gratifying that the bulk of Lyceum students coped with the programme, and Alexander Yanovich and Daniil Korshunov received certificates with honours! During these two years, talented teachers Rosa Ershova and Alexandra Shornikova were teaching students. The success of school students would be impossible without the teachers.
Director of the JINR University Centre Stanislav Pakuliak and Head of the JINR Digital Service Department Mikhail Vasiliev awarded certificates to students. They highlighted in their parting words that confident knowledge of digital technologies provide people with competitive advantages in modern society.
One of the best students of the Yandex.Lyceum Maria Bednyakova shared her impressions of the study, “At the first several lessons, we learned everything we could be studying for 2 years (8 and 9 grades) at school. And we learned the most interesting part – how to use it. Despite the fact that we were studying from home in the second half of the academic year, the first year of the programme went smoothly. Moreover, I now understand what mum tells university students at remote classes.
The second year turned out to be harder and more interesting. Especially projects. The first one was particularly unpleasant for me. But I wanted badly to present the second project – the process of creating a game was so exciting! Within the framework of the third project, I wrote a skill for Alisa (Yandex voice assistant) without the possibility for testing, and then I debugged it in a relatively short time. In addition, I had to write the bulk of the code in the Crimea, between the tours of the final stage of the All-Russian School Olympiad in literature, but it was fun!
Yandex. Lyceum is amazing. I would like to convey endless gratitude for this opportunity and I would like to especially highlight the role of Alexandra Shornikova who taught our classes.”
Two years of work at the Lyceum were rich and interesting for a teacher of Yandex.Lyceum, a professional programmer and developer Alexandra Shornikova, “First of all, I would like to thank students for their courage, perseverance, hard work, and interest in new things. It was not simple from time to time for both students and me, but thanks to their fiery eyes and sense of humour, we managed to do a lot over these two years.
It was amazing to check the projects implemented by students. They chose topics by themselves, united into teams, distributed tasks, searched for information, wrote programmes, and corrected mistakes. The project on developing their own computer game was especially engaging. As a result, we got very interesting and mature works: the whole group tested them at the defence of the projects.
If I was said at the beginning that school students would be able to achieve such a level, I would not believe it. Many students exceeded my expectations: they were working hard, asked interesting questions, worried about tests, made projects until the last night.
We all have learned a lot over these two years. This is not only about programming. I hope that students will deepen and support their knowledge. I wish them every success and interesting tasks in the future.”
Classes in the Yandex.Lyceum are held in the format of additional education with the support of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The first-year study group for 2021-2022 will be formed based on the open competition that starts in August. 8-9 grade school students are kindly invited to participate in the competition.
