AYSS seminar at JINR Scientists’ Club

Culture

On 4 December 2024, at 4:00 PM, the Association of Young Scientists and Specialists at JINR invites everyone interested to the next seminar that will take place in the Big Hall of the JINR Scientists’ Club (6, Joliot-Curie street, left side).

A senior assistant at the Laboratory of Neutron Physics at JINR Ivan Litvak will deliver a presentation “Regarding the boiling of nitrogen in a bucket”.

Cold neutrons are neutrons with de Broglie wavelengths in the range of 40-200 nm. Such neutrons have a wide range of applications in materials science, biology, and basic research in various branches of science. The speaker will demonstrate the process of producing the moderator material (in the form of spherical pellets) used in the cryogenic moderators of the IBR-2M Research Reactor for thermal neutron thermalisation. The physical model of their creation will be considered, including the use of Rupert drops and the Leidenfrost inverse effect. The speaker will also discuss the purpose of boiling of liquid nitrogen in a bucket.
