Seminar topic: “Beams of charged heavy particles for radiotherapy”
Speaker: A. G. Molokanov
Abstract:
Beams of heavy charged particles—protons, heavy ions, negative pi-mesons—are used for radiation therapy. The main advantage of heavy charged-particle beams is the possibility of forming spatial dose distributions with maximum dose area most closely matching the shape of the irradiated target (conformal irradiation). Additionally, in exposure of biological objects to radiation, the most important characteristic is linear energy transfer that governs the radiation impact on living cells.
At the seminar, the properties of heavy charged-particle beams and dosimeter measurement results will be discussed.
