Speaker: Alexander Titov (RAS Mikheev Institute of Metal Physics)

Abstract:

Analysis of the stability of tetra- and octa-coordination of the intercalant in layered transition metal dichalcogenides with the 1T structure shows that the ionisation potential of the host lattice metal plays a critical role in the choice of the type of intercalant position. In the limit of high ionisation potential values, octa-coordination is stable; in the limit of low values, tetra-coordination is stable. It has been shown that in materials with a tetra-coordinated intercalant, a non-centrosymmetric distribution of the intercalant is stable, leading to the stability of the ferroelectric state. The current state of the problem (experiment) is presented. The possibilities of controlling the ionisation potential in order to stabilise the ferroelectric state in materials intercalated with magnetic metals are discussed. The role of free charge carriers in such materials is discussed. The possibilities of electrochemical control of the parameters of ferroelectric ordering are discussed.
