Seminar topic: “Aerogel Cherenkov counters: modern status”

Speaker: Anatoly Kulikov

Abstract:

Aerogel is an artificially synthesised material, very light and almost transparent. Aerogel has the refraction index intermediate between gases and liquids, 1.006

First aerogel counters were of threshold type, then more complicated but more informative RICH counters appeared. In the last years the FARICH counters are developing. These counters are focusing aerogel RICH counters with several aerogel layers of different refraction indices.

In the facility SPD at NICA it is necessary to identify pi- and K-mesons with momenta up to 5-6 GeV/c. Aerogel counters seem to be the best candidate for achieving this aim.

The purpose of the seminar is to inform colleagues about the development of the aerogel counter technique.
