Abstract:

The problem of full-scale ground-based modeling of space radiation using heavy ion accelerators is an urgent task of space radiobiology. The existing approaches to such modeling of a complex multicomponent radiation field are reviewed. A new type of space radiation simulator based on a 1 GeV/n iron ion beam is proposed. The design suggests the use of special rotating converters, consisting of target segments of different thickness. Such design ensures the uniformity of the secondary particle fields behind the targets, using a flat uniform field of primary iron ions. It has been calculated that the proposed setup with four removable converters will make it possible to simulate not only the linear energy transfer distribution of space radiation, represented by a component of galactic cosmic radiation, but will also be capable of reproducing continuous energy spectra of all charged fragments from protons to cobalt ions.
