Moving forward for knowledge to the island of Lipnya!
Education, 18 August 2020
After a long break, a series of scientific events of JINR has symbolically started with a youth school that took place on Lipnya Island in Ivankovo Reservoir from 24 to 26 July. Every summer, the School hosts participants (students, postgraduates and young researchers) from all the JINR laboratories. XXIV Summer School for Young Scientists and Specialists Lipnya-2020 was not an exception. Despite the complexity of the situation, more than 60 participants and lecturers visited the event. Lectures were held outdoors in compliance with all the requirements regarding the distancing, disinfection and mask regime.
Leading employees of our Institute spoke about complex things in simple words. The organizing committee of the Association of Young Scientists and Specialists took efforts to select reporters from all the laboratories in order to cover a wide range of works conducted at JINR and other scientific centres.
The programme was very rich: the lectures started on the very first day after the arrival and continued throughout the event. For example, participants of the School were lucky to learn about the NICA collider and the software in modern physical experiments, about proton medicine and radiobiological research, as well as detectors of the BM@N facility. Moreover, a report was made on the fate of the results published in the most famous scientific journals.
It was the first time the School held a workshop “Introduction to parallel computing” at which participants could use a small piece of the computing power of the Supercomputer “Govorun” right from their laptops. It was brought to the island by organizers. Following the tradition, the programme included time to discuss problems that concern young employees of the Institute and ways to solve them. A meeting with a representative of the Directorate, RAS Corresponding Member Grigory Dmitrievich Shirkov had a round-table format. In particular, participants discussed changes to the rules for selecting the winners of AYSS scientific conferences held in Dubna and Alushta. The issue of transfer of active postgraduates to full-time positions was not left without discussion. It was decided to meet with representatives of the Directorate in August in the territory of the Institute for it.
It should be also noted that participants of the School were lucky as far as the weather was fine. So, it was possible to play volleyball and football after lectures. And, of course, a bonfire and guitar songs after sunset united everyone.
