Slovak Republic

General information on collaboration

Slovakia (earlier as part of CSSR, and since 1993 as an independent state) has participated in JINR activities since its foundation. Today, the Slovak Republic is one of the leading JINR Member States in terms of the amount of work accomplished. 13 scientific and technical, scientific and research as well as educational organisations of Slovakia are partners of JINR.

Slovak scientific centres – Comenius University Bratislava, Institute of Physics SAS, Slovak Technical University in Bratislava, and P.I. Šafárik University in Kosice – have been JINR partners for many years. Joint projects with these scientific organisations are underway, and good working relationships are maintained. Research institutions in Slovakia have been working on developing their experimental base and relevant experts in close collaboration with JINR. The Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions assisted in nurturing the personnel and technology for the Cyclotron Centre in Bratislava. Assistance in developing technology for the production of radioisotopes used in nuclear medicine, and in establishing a laboratory for modification of polymeric materials based on the accelerator has also been provided. Slovak experts from Comenius University in Bratislava have been participating in the development and production of complex prototypes for radiotherapy using heavy ion beams of the Nuclotron-M in the Veksler and Baldin Laboratory of High Energy Physics. The high-flux pulsed fast reactor IBR-2 at the Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics is regularly used by scientists from several Slovak institutions for a wide range of hard and soft condensed matter research.

Slovakia takes part in joint educational programmes allowing Slovak students to visit the JINR laboratories for gaining practical experience in working with large-scale facilities based on nuclear physics.

Smolenice, Stará Lesná, and Štrbské Pleso are small Slovak towns well-known among many JINR staff members, as several JINR conferences on fission physics, relativistic nuclear physics and many international conferences on hadron structure and other international events took place here with traditional participation of representative delegations of JINR scientists.

The regular international conference on Relativistic nuclear physics from hundreds of MeV to TeV was held in Stará Lesná. The International School of Nuclear Physics Methods of Radiobiology and Medicine took place in Bratislava. Every year, theoretical physicists from Dubna take part in a small trilateral conference on theoretical physics in Slovakia.

National groups

The languages of international communication at JINR are Russian and English. However, one can hear the speech in many languages in Dubna, including the languages of JINR member-states when the compatriots, the representatives of the same national groups meet each other.

Over the years of existence of JINR the national groups have developed their traditions, forms of cooperation and collaboration with other national groups. Their leaders, appointed by the plenipotentiaries of the JINR member-states play an organizing role in the life of national groups.

Being in constant contact with plenipotentiaries, embassies of member-states, JINR Directorate and management services, they take part in solving the problems connected with the residency of their colleagues-compatriots and their families in Russia, with the organization of their life and leisure. The Council of the leaders of the national groups meets periodically. The representatives of the Directorate and the services of the Institute are invited to these meetings confronted with the urgent problems of the collaborators from the member-states. Due to this, the Directorate can make timely and adequate decisions.

On the occasions of major public holidays of the member-states, the national groups arrange receptions. These festive events are often accompanied by art exhibitions, photo exhibitions, and enrich JINR staff members’ knowledge about the member-states, their people and culture.
