Children science fair at JINR Museum

The JINR Museum of History of Science and Technology hosted the 10th Mendeleev Readings scientific and practical conference, which has become one of the museum’s traditions over the years. The programme of the event included 11 presentations by schoolchildren aged from 7 to 15.

According to the organizers, the purpose of the conference is to give schoolchildren who are interested in various scientific phenomena an opportunity to talk about them vividly and intelligibly, to broaden their horizons, and stimulate curiosity.

The children conducted research in chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, and astronomy; each presentation was accompanied by ingenious experiments. The speakers presented works on the following topics: “Extraordinary paper”, “Assembling a radio receiver model with your own hands”, “Tea: from ancient times to the present day”, “Water and oil: the struggle and unity of opposites”, “Amazing snails”, “Clocks in time”, “Musical instruments out of improvised materials”, “Sound research at the Dubna Choir School for Boys and Young Men”, “Measuring the size of the Earth”. All the presentations aroused keen interest of the young audience, the visitors asked the speakers a lot of questions.

JINR employees Dmitry Dryablov and Anastasia Zlotnikova demonstrated to children the Extreme Cooling experiment with liquid nitrogen. As usual, the readings ended with an intellectual quiz for child-parent teams. The game was a delight not only for children, but also for adults. All the speakers were granted scientific puzzles, diplomas, and merchandise of the Joint Institute.
