The Real Modern Pictures Publishing House released a book marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ivan V. Chuvilo, an outstanding scientist, one of the co-founders of the Laboratory of High Energy at JINR, who was the Director of the Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics for 30 years. The published book belongs to the series “Portrait against the background of the era”, which already counts a number of publications about exceptional JINR scientists: Vladimir Kadyshevsky, Mikhail Meshcheryakov, Yuri Oganessian, Georgy Flerov, Ilya Frank, Dmitry Shirkov.
The book discusses the scientist’s life path and the formation of his strong-willed character, greatly influenced by fighting in the Great Patriotic War. “He is known for his highest degree of responsibility,” one of JINR’s founding fathers Vladimir Veksler said of him. In the early years of LHEP JINR foundation, from 1954 to 1968, the scientist was one of the most active leaders who fostered the spirit of the laboratory and determined the development of its main facilities and research areas.
On 20 December, the Museum of History of Science and Technology of JINR hosted a book presentation where JINR employees Vladimir Nikitin, Viktor Kukhtin, Pavel Zarubin, and Boris Starchenko shared their memories of Ivan V. Chuvilo. Editor Mikhail Lukichev reflected on collecting information for the book. Irina Lebedeva and the scientist’s daughter Zoya Shargatova spoke at the event on behalf of the scientist’s relatives.
“I think that both Ivan Chuvilo and Vladimir Veksler would be proud of what our Laboratory is becoming today. It continues to develop, keeping up the work started by such wonderful people as Veksler, Chuvilo, Baldin, and others. We remember these people and appreciate the contribution they once made, the years of their lives they sacrificed on the altar of science. Their work continues in us and those who will come after us,” VBLHEP JINR Acting Director Andrey Butenko said.
“This generation had a desire for something more than material values,” Chuvilo’s daughter Zoya Shargatova noted. She said that her father’s distinctive traits were curiosity and determination in relation to science, technology, books, and sports. “And as someone who had been through the war, he hated any kind of violence,” Zoya Shargatova concluded.
“I was lucky to meet Ivan Chuvilo several times when he visited our department. He radiated curiosity and really listened to the person speaking. He maintained friendly relations with his previous employees, they kept up an interest in each other’s work. This is a good example of cooperation between colleagues,” VBLHEP JINR Scientific Secretary Alexander Cheplakov said.
