New properties of elastic proton-proton and proton-antiproton scattering at high energies

A leading researcher at the Standard Model Sector of the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics at JINR Oleg Selyugin studied new properties of elastic scattering of hadrons at small angles based on all existing experimental data for dσ/dt of pp and pp scattering at s ≥ 540 GeV. As a result of the study, the main characteristics of the corresponding non-trivial terms of the elastic scattering amplitude were obtained. This opens up new opportunities for making predictions for hadron interactions at essentially larger energies at future colliders and at ultra-high energies of cosmic rays.

By determining the energy dependence of the oscillation term and the term with an extremely larger slope, the scientist demonstrated that part of the oscillation term has a different sign for pp and pp scattering reactions. In addition, it was shown that the period of the oscillation term agrees with the scaling properties predicted by the Auberson-Kinoshita-Martin (AKM) theorem. The high quality quantitative description of all data at s ≥ 540 GeV in the framework of the high energy general structure (HEGS) model, which takes into account the generalised hadron structure, confirms the high probability of the existence of new properties that can be connected with peripheral hadron interaction.

The results of the research were published in The European Physical Journal C in June 2024.
