Dear colleagues and friends,

JINR continues its active work on strengthening ties with the Member States and Associate Members. Last week, representatives of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan visited JINR. In addition, the Joint Institute hosted a workshop on accelerator technologies with the participation of specialists from South Africa and Vietnam.

JINR delegations joined a number of important international events: the 68th IAEA General Conference, the Eurasian Women’s Forum, and the meeting of the Council of Young Scientists of the International Association of Academies of Sciences.

Cooperation

Uzbekistan–JINR: cooperation development prospects

On 21 September, representatives of the leadership of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan visited JINR. At the meeting at the Institute’s Directorate, the parties discussed the opportunities for deepening partnership in joint research and personnel training and made the decision to hold JINR Days in Uzbekistan.

Project of new Vietnam Accelerator Complex discussed at JINR

On 10–20 September, JINR hosted a workshop on accelerator technologies. Experts from Vietnam and South Africa got introduced to the Institute’s research infrastructure, heard lectures at the laboratories, and discussed the concept and potential of the accelerator complex project, which JINR is taking part in.

JINR at 68th IAEA General Conference

The Institute’s delegation, headed by Vice-Director Latchesar Kostov, took part in the conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as observers. On 18 September, they met the IAEA Deputy Director General to discuss the implementation of the cooperation agreement between the Agency and the Institute signed in September 2022.

JINR scientists at Eurasian Women’s Forum

During the forum held on 18–20 September, JINR employees spoke at the session titled “Women in science – leaders in the scientific and educational sphere”. They discussed ways to advance equality in science and put forward a proposal for JINR to serve as a platform for promoting it.

Publications

FLNP JINR researchers evaluated effect of rare-earth metals on cyanobacteria

In collaboration with colleagues from Moldova and Romania, the scientists studied the accumulation of holmium(III), erbium(III), and gadolinium(III) by cyanobacteria Arthrospira platensis using neutron activation analysis and elements’ effects on biomass quantity and biochemical composition. Microorganisms published the results of the research.

On calculations of quantum-electrodynamic radiative corrections to lepton anomalies

JINR theoretical physicists and their Belarusian colleagues co-authored a paper on analytical calculations of the tenth order QED radiative corrections to lepton anomalies within the Mellin-Barnes representation. The article was issued in the Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics.

Assessment of chemical elements in soil in Romania

Specialists from the Laboratory of Neutron Physics at JINR and scientific centres in Romania studied the multi-elemental composition of soils in the vicinity of siderurgical industry and assessed toxic risks. You can find out more about the research in the article in Minerals.

The JINR Publishing Department has released the fifth issue of Physics of Elementary Particles and Atomic Nuclei, Letters, a journal constituting review articles by leading physicists from the JINR Member States and scientists from all over the world.

Announcements

Registration for 2nd International African Symposium on Exotic Nuclei starts

On 9–13 December, iThemba LABS and JINR will hold the 2nd Symposium on Exotic Nuclei. The event will take place near Cape Town, South Africa. Registration is available via the link until 22 November. The abstract submission deadline for speakers is 18 October.

Logunov Institute for High Energy Physics invites everyone interested to take part in the Youth Conference on Theoretical and Experimental Physics scheduled for 5–8 November. You can register and submit your abstract via the link until 10 October.

The Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences hosted the Council of the International Association of Academies of Sciences (IAAS). AYSS leadership took part in the work of the IAAS Community of Young Scientists, and AYSS Chair Vladislav Rozhkov was appointed Vice-Chair of the Council.

JINR at Veksler track and field run

On 22 September, the annual run in memory of a JINR founding father Vladimir I. Veksler took place. The JINR Sports VK page posted the names of the winners, along with many pictures of the run. Congratulations to the JINR employees on the successful performance!

On 7–8 September, Kimry hosted the Arctic Cup tournament. The team of the Joint Institute came second. One of the team members, Alexandra Peshkova, was the only woman at the tournament and won the audience prize for her great performance. Congratulations to the athletes!
