Discussing mathematical problems in quantum information technologies at MLIT at JINR

On 27–28 May 2024, the Meshcheryakov Laboratory of Information Technologies at JINR is hosting the Workshop on Mathematical Problems in Quantum Information Technologies (MPQIT-2024) in a hybrid format. During the meeting, researchers from the JINR Member States and partner countries specialising in mathematical problems in quantum information science will share their experience and research results.

The event brought together about 60 participants from MLIT and BLTP at JINR, Alexandria University (Egypt), Dr. D.Y. Patil University (India), Moscow State University, Saint Petersburg State University, ITMO, Dubna University, Tver State University, South Ural State University, Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The event aims to create a unified platform for scientists from the JINR Member States and all over the world working on mathematical problems in quantum information technologies to share experience and discuss research results. The Programme Committee of the event includes representatives of the leading scientific centres of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Egypt, Georgia, and Russia.

JINR Vice-Director Latchesar Kostov delivered a speech at the workshop’s opening. He congratulated the organizers and participants on the opening of the event. “It is highly important that in challenging times for international scientific and technical cooperation, researchers from different countries visit JINR to discuss burning issues of modern science,” he concluded.

MLIT JINR Director Sergei Shmatov wished the scientists successful and fruitful work. “I hope that the workshop will be fruitful for us, reflecting in our further joint research,” MLIT JINR Director noted.

Co-Chairman of the workshop’s Organizing Committee, Head of the MLIT Algebraic and Quantum Computing Sector, Chairman of the JINR Committee of Plenipotentiaries Arsen Khvedelidze stressed that the path to holding the event had been long. MLIT JINR Scientific Leader, Co-Chairman of the workshop’s Organizing Committee Vladimir Korenkov remarked that MLIT had been holding three annual international conferences for many years. The MPQIT-2024 organizers are expecting that the event will give an additional impetus to the establishment of the fourth annual MLIT conference. “We dream of hosting the fourth conference at our Laboratory, which will be devoted to quantum technologies. The workshop will become a springboard to this,” Vladimir Korenkov said. In addition, one of the sections of the Mathematical Modelling and Computational Physics–2024 International Conference, which is to be held by MLIT JINR in Yerevan in October this year, will be devoted to quantum technologies.

President of the Egyptian Academy of Scientific Research and Technology (ASRT) Gina El-Feky welcomed the workshop’s participants. She underlined that the topic of the meeting was highly relevant. Egypt is extremely interested in the development of quantum computing and plans to start the construction of the corresponding infrastructure. Gina El-Feky announced a report by Head of the Alexandria Quantum Computing Group (AleQCG) Ahmed Younes. Following the presentation, she proposed to discuss the possibilities of developing joint projects with JINR scientists in this area and training JINR employees in Egypt.

Two plenary reports opened the programme of the meeting. Professor Ahmed Younes, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Science at Alexandria University, Founder and Head of the Alexandria Quantum Computing Group, spoke about AleQCG’s activities and international scientific cooperation. The group has been operating since 2016 at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Alexandria University. Sergey Kilin, Chairman of the JINR Scientific Council, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, a recognised expert in quantum optics and quantum information science, delivered a report on the prospects for creating a quantum computer and research in the field over the past 25 years.

Further programme of the event features reports on mathematical aspects of problems of fundamental and applied quantum technologies, such as quantum information theory, quantum communications, quantum computing, modelling, and quantum algorithms. The workshop’s schedule provides participants with enough time for informal discussions on fundamental aspects of quantum computer science and the issues that researchers face.
