Popular Geology Day

Culture

On 15 April 2023, the JINR Universal Public Library “Blokhinka” invites adults and children from 8 years old to a Popular Geology Day. Employees of the Innovation Centre “Popular geology” of the Faculty of Geology of Lomonosov Moscow State University will give lectures. As a parallel programme, there will be held also two exhibitions at the library.

Schedule:

  1. 1:00 PM, lecture “Attention, an earthquake!”

Lecturer: senior researcher of the Department of Dynamic Geology of the MSU Faculty of Geology А. V. Spiridonov.

An earthquake is a catastrophe! Is this sentence always true? Are there earthquakes in Moscow and Moscow Region? Is there protection against them?

  2. 2:15 PM, lecture “Do earthquakes affect mass extinctions?”

Lecturer: senior researcher of the Department of Paleontology of the MSU Faculty of Geology V. М. Nazarova.

An earthquake is a terrible disaster. Compared to other natural disasters, it brings the most victims. Earthquakes of the past were no less disastrous than now. Can extinction of organisms be related to earthquakes? There is a connection between them but it is not so obvious.

  3. 3:30 PM, lecture “Fossil colour”

Lecturer: senior researcher of the Department of Paleontology of the MSU Faculty of Geology V. М. Nazarova.

Artists paint for us multi-coloured world pictures of the distant past. But how colourful was this ancient world? Where did an artist use imagination, and where they use logical conclusions and scientific facts? How can we restore colour if all fossils are grey now? What colour were dinosaurs and mammoths really? Why the modern world is colourful? Who needs it and why?
