Results of 2022 sociological survey
News, 17 March 2023
The data of a sociological survey among almost 600 JINR employees has been processed. The survey was carried out in December 2022. You can read the report on the JINR website in the “For employees” section. The index assessing the level of social satisfaction of JINR employees has showed that there have been no significant changes over the past year. The share of rather and fully satisfied respondents was 63.9%, according to the results of last year’s survey in 2021 the share was 64.1%.
In a number of areas, respondents noted an improvement in the situation. On average, over 76% of employees are satisfied with organization and working conditions. It is slightly higher than in 2021. This is primarily due to an increase in satisfaction with the organization of leisure activities. More than 85% of employees are satisfied with the existing labour relations in the team. 67% of respondents noted that they were quite satisfied with the relationship with the direct management. At the same time, in the comments, employees of all the departments pointed out the need for events increasing the team cohesion, creating a favourable socio-psychological climate, and introducing employees to each other in big laboratories.
Like last year, the financial situation is the most problematic area in the social satisfaction of the Institute’s staff. With high importance for employees, less than 45% of respondents are satisfied with their financial situation. The share of those who characterise their financial situation as high has decreased. The share of those who characterise their financial situation as low has increased. However, researchers noted that over the past year their financial situation had improved.
The housing issue remains relevant, especially for young scientists and specialists. 53% of respondents in general and 64% of respondents under the age of 35 said that they needed to improve their living conditions.
Employees pointed out to the remaining problems in the JINR’s social infrastructure. Those are objects of sports, restaurant, cultural infrastructure and the well-being of the Institute’s sites. Despite the relatively low importance of the indicator in comparison with others, the role of social infrastructure in the social satisfaction of the staff is very significant, since it ensures a comfortable existence of people in the organization. For example, in the answers to open questions, respondents indicated a lack of awareness either about objects in general, or about conditions of their use, the services they provide, prices, and working hours. Many employees of the Institute have never heard of some objects. Employees, citizens of other countries, indicated the lack of information in English.
Unfortunately, not all problems can be solved quickly. But it is possible to respond to some requests of employees faster. So, the survey showed that there was a request of employees for psychological support programmes. Under the auspices of the JINR Women’s Committee, the second group of the psychological support programme for JINR employees, the “Anti-crisis course”, started in February of this year. Not everyone could join the group. The Women’s Committee is going to provide an opportunity for everyone, who has signed up, to take this course in the following groups. In addition, employees expressed a request to improve their skills. Last year, a series of lectures “Lifehacks of some use for a scientist” was held, where JINR employees had the opportunity to learn more about the art of public speaking. In March of this year, the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems JINR continued the project in the format of the Effective Communication training. In addition, the Association of Young Scientists and Specialists JINR organized practical classes for mastering oratory.
In general, despite the difficulties, more than half (58%) of respondents assess the work at JINR as undoubtedly prestigious. On average, every second employee of the Institute considers the work carried out by them to be interesting, significant, promising, challenging, and creative. 83% would choose to work at JINR again (66% in 2021). 58% would not like to work in another organization (40% in 2021).
