Education, 05 April 2022
On 23 and 25 March, JINR staff members Semen Gurskiy and Elena Badawy took part in the English Language Week in the Physics and Mathematics Lyceum named after Academician V. G. Kadyshevsky. The lectures in English on the history of the Joint Institute and the development of nuclear research in our country, as well as on the treatment of oncological diseases by proton therapy were presented to 7-10 grade students.
A senior specialist of the International Cooperation Department Elena Badawy presented a historical overview. In her lecture, she touched upon the aspects of the development of the nuclear programme in the 40s and 50s of the XX century and the prerequisites for the formation of JINR. Then she introduced students to the modern structure of the Institute and told them about the Member States that were part of it. Elena Badawy highlighted the importance of international contribution to the world scientific research.
From the lecture by a researcher of the Dzhelepov Laboratory of Nuclear Problems Semen Gurskiy Lyceum students learned about the proton therapy, which is widely used worldwide for the treatment of oncological diseases, about the technique used for it, and the advantages of the method over the traditional surgical one. Semen supplemented his lecture with his own interactive video demonstrating the main stages of the process from obtaining protons to delivering the beam to the patient.
The Regional Physics and Mathematics Lyceum named after Academician V. G. Kadyshevsky established with active support from JINR is aimed at creating a comfortable educational environment for the harmonious development of young members of society and revealing their talents. The Lyceum trains future specialists in physics and mathematics, information technology, biology, and chemistry.
