Revolution Day in Arab Republic of Egypt
Organization, 23 July 2022
23 July marks the Revolution Day in the Arab Republic of Egypt, a Member State of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The Revolution Day is a national holiday dedicated to the anniversary of the July Revolution that took place in Egypt in 1952.
Scientific ties between JINR and national scientific centres of Egypt have a long-standing history dating back to the late 1960s. Since then, fruitful scientific cooperation of Egyptian physicists with JINR researchers continues to be strengthened and extended. Raising of the status of the Arab Republic of Egypt from an Associate Member up to a full-fledged JINR Member State was an expected result.
This was preceded by a long preparatory work. The stage of closer JINR – Egypt cooperation began on 3 March 2009, when an Agreement was signed between JINR and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Government of Egypt.
On 15 December 2018, a roadmap for the JINR – Egypt cooperation development was signed.
On 16 March 2021, the 10th regular session of the Joint Committee on JINR-Arab Republic of Egypt cooperation was held as a video conference.
On 23 July 2021, participants of a meeting of JINR Director Grigory Trubnikov with President of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology of Egypt (ASRT) Mahmoud Sakr and ASRT Vice-President Gina El-Feky discussed a possible update of the Egyptian participation in JINR to the full membership.
On 13 September 2021, a plenary session “Strategic Opportunities for Advancing Global Collaborative Perspectives Towards Achieving 2030 Main Research Goals” was held in Cairo, where the role of JINR as one of the key partners of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology of Egypt was emphasised.
The next day, at the headquarters of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology of Egypt, an in-person opening ceremony of the JINR Information Centre at ASRT, one of the first JINR Information centres operating since December 2020, took place.
Egyptian scientists participate in research conducted at JINR on 10 topics of the JINR Topical Plan 2022, including the development of the DRIBs-III accelerator complex (FLNR) and the NICA accelerator complex (VBLHEP). In addition, the Institute has ten joint projects of JINR and ARE, such as mapping the natural radioactivity of certain regions of Egypt, the study of archaeological samples and environmental assessment using neutron activation analysis and other methods, the development of scintillation detectors, and much more.
Educational cooperation is actively developing. For example, on 6 September 2021, the Science School for Students of the School University of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology of Egypt began its work. 14 students of the ASRT School University aged 13 – 16 arrived in Dubna to participate in the School. Full-time practices are regularly held for students from the Arab Republic of Egypt organized by the JINR University Centre.
The Directorate of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research congratulates Egyptian colleagues and partners, as well as their relatives, on Revolution Day and wishes them good health, happiness, well-being, luck, and new professional successes for the benefits of science and progress.
