Lecture course on Higgs boson physics
Education, 27 September 2016
All intrested are kindly invited to hear a course of lectures on Higgs boson physics «Higgs mechanism in the Standard Model and beyond». The 6 seminars of the lecture course will be held on 1-3 and 8-10 November 2016, from 10.00 am until 12.00 am in the Conference Hall of the Dzhelepov Laboratory of Nuclear Problems.
Speaker: I.P. Ivanov (CFTP, Instituto Superior Tecnico, U. Lisboa)
Seminars topics, 1-3 November:
- Overview: electroweak theory and the role(s) of the Higgs mechanism. Hopes from bSM. Higgs mechanisms (insights into fermion properties, CP violation, FCNC). A very brief history.
- Abelian Higgs model: giving mass to the gauge boson; giving mass to the fermion, basic properties of the Higgs boson.
- Full electroweak theory and the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism:
- electroweak lagrangian before EWSB and symmetries,
- massive W and Z,
- the ρ-parameter and custodial symmetry,
- masses and mixing of fermions within SM,
- a brief outline of the SM Higgs boson properties.
Seminars topics, 8-10 November:
- EWSB in terms of gauge-invariant quantities, Elitzur’s theorem.
- More than one Higgs doublet:
- Higgs mechanism in MSSM: initial lagrangian, minimizing potential and tan β, physical Higgs spectrum: h, H, A, H ± , their couplings to other particles, very brief remarks on phenomenology.
- Inert doublet model: a simplest model with symmetry-protected DM candidate.
- Several Higgses in fermion sector: lepton-flavour-violatiing decays, flavour-changing neutral coupling. Recent hints on H → μτ and deviations in b → s“.
- Short intro in models with Higgs singlets or higher representations.
- Short intro in Higgs sectors in models with higher gauge groups (with the example of 331 model).
