JINR scientists at GEEK PICNIC festival in Moscow
News, 29 July 2022
On 30 July, the largest festival GEEK PICNIC dedicated to popularisation of science and achievements of modern technology was held in Muzeon Park of Arts in Moscow. At the festival, JINR scientists will give lectures on the latest achievements of nuclear physical technologies in the analysis of environmental pollution, neutrino physics, and information technologies, as well as talk about the NICA megascience project implemented in Dubna.
Two JINR speakers will give talks at the Science and Space Lecture series. A lecture “NICA – Back to the Future” by Sergey Mertz, a senior researcher of the Laboratory of High Energy Physics, will take place at 2 p.m. The lecturer will talk what a particle accelerator and a magnifying glass have in common, how accelerators help people, and much more. At 3 p.m., Mark Shirchenko, a senior researcher of the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems, in his lecture “Neutrino Puzzles” will talk about neutrino – the most elusive elementary particle that holds the secrets of the universe and beyond.
Can moss speak and what do neutrons talk about? What is the secret of friendship between water and brewer’s yeast? Inga Zinicovscaia, the Head of a Sector of the Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics, will reveal these and other secrets of biomonitor organisms in the analysis of the ecosystem in the lecture series “Ecology” at 3 p.m. The lecture will talk about processes and subjects that can truthfully reveal the real state of the environment, which is so important to all of us.
Igor Pelevanyuk, a researcher at the Laboratory of Information Technologies, will give a lecture “Computing in science. How to find a needle in a haystack?” in “IT/AI” lecture series at 3 p.m. You will find out how many calculations a scientist has to perform to get a scientific result, as well as how methods of processing large amounts of data in particle physics.
The GEEK PICNIC festival gives a great opportunity to hear about scientists’ and inventors’ achievements, about notable and interesting technological developments. One can learn and see how science is developing in Russia and the whole world, which technologies have already become a part of our everyday life and which ones will become a reality in the foreseeable future.
