JINR is increasingly opening its doors to guests
Education, 25 November 2016
The JINR Visit Centre, where meetings, briefings, lectures and seminars are constantly held, is open not only for adults, but also for children.
On 18 November 2016, the state-of-the-art Visit Centre welcomed the 5th grade students from school №7 under the supervision of M. Tolchenova to a multimedia excursion and a popular scientific lecture about JINR.
Children were told about JINR fields of activity and what Dubna is famous for, for example, about synthesising new chemical elements, exploring cosmic neutrinos and about scientists some Dubna streets are named after, and also a little bit about applied research: air pollution monitoring, explosive detection and the existence of the Medico-Technical Complex on JINR premises.
As the final part of the event school students with undisguised pleasure participated in the experiments with liquid nitrogen, which demonstrated the effects of extreme temperatures on different materials and the properties of high-temperature superconductors.
It came as a pleasant surprise that during the lecture some children managed to tell about the birth of the universe and what the megascience NICA project is and were consequently awarded the new version of the periodic table of elements, which includes all the 10 elements discovered at JINR.
It is planned that in the future such excursions will take place on a regular basis. Furthermore, due to the completion of its total renovation the Museum of History of Science and Technology of JINR (where young specialists give popular scientific lectures and lectures on the history of JINR and Dubna for school and university students as well as town visitors and foreigners) will relatively soon resume its extensive activities.
JINR central objective of organizing such events is to draw young people’s attention and to develop their interest in the activities of the Institute, education and science in general.
